Characteristics of polycarboxylic acid water reducer

The function of water reducer is to improve the working performance of fresh mortar and increase the fluidity of mortar without reducing the amount of cement; to reduce the amount of cement and increase the strength of mortar while maintaining certain working performance; to reduce the amount of cement per unit volume of mortar and save cement while maintaining a certain strength; to improve the pumpability of mortar mixture and other physical and mechanical properties of mortar.


Advantages of polycarboxylic acid water reducer


1. Low dosage and good dispersibility;


2. Good slump retention, with almost no loss of slump within 90 minutes;


3. When compared under the same fluidity, it can delay the setting of cement;


4. It has a large degree of freedom in molecular structure, many controllable technical parameters in manufacturing technology, and great potential for high performance;


5. No formaldehyde is used in the synthesis, so it does not pollute the environment;


6. Good compatibility with cement and other types of admixtures;


7. Using polycarboxylate water reducers, more slag or fly ash can be used to replace cement, thereby reducing costs.



At present, the most widely used water reducers are lignin water reducers, naphthalene and melamine high-efficiency water reducers, and polycarboxylate high-efficiency water reducers. 

Their respective characteristics are as follows:


  1. Lignin-based water reducer: Lignin-based water reducers include calcium lignin sulfonate (wood calcium), sodium lignin sulfonate (wood sodium) and magnesium lignin sulfonate (wood magnesium). The appropriate dosage is 0.2%~0.3% of the cement mass.

  2. Naphthalene-based high-efficiency water reducer: Due to the mature production process, stable supply of raw materials, large output and wide application, coal tar-based water reducers usually refer to naphthalene-based water reducers. The appropriate dosage is 0.2%~1.0% of the cement mass.

  3. Melamine high-efficiency water reducer: Melamine high-efficiency water reducer (commonly known as melamine water reducer), its chemical name is sulfonated melamine formaldehyde resin. This type of water reducer is actually an anionic polymer surfactant with the characteristics of non-toxicity and high efficiency. The appropriate dosage is 5%~2.0% of the cement mass.

  4. Polycarboxylate Superplasticizer: Polycarboxylic acid has developed into a new type of high-efficiency water reducer. It has excellent properties such as high strength and good heat resistance, durability, and weather resistance. Its characteristics are small slump loss at high temperatures, good fluidity, and no need to significantly increase the amount of water reducer added at lower temperatures. Its suitable dosage is 0.05%~1.0% of the cement mass.
